Tamron's new 17-70mm F/2.8 is the fast 4.1x standard zoom lens for mirrorless system cameras with APS-C sensor. It offers a universal focal length range of 17mm to 70mm (25.5 - 105mm KB equivalent) with a constant aperture of F/2.8, as well as high image quality. It features Tamron's proprietary VC image stabilization system to prevent camera shake when shooting, and uses artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure steady images when shooting movies.

The lens is exceptionally compact and lightweight, as well as splash-proof. The front lens is coated with a water-repellent fluorine coating. Like the other models in the Tamron E-series, the 17-70mm F2.8 has a 67mm filter thread, so a polarizing or gray filter will fit on all models. The lens is also compatible with Sony's advanced camera features, such as Fast Hybrid AF and AF with Eye Detection, making it an ideal choice in many everyday shooting situations. The optical construction of the 17-70mm F2.8 comprises 16 elements in 12 groups, including two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lenses and a Hybrid Aspherical. The arrangement of these special optical components ensures high resolution performance across the entire image area.

The 17-70mm F/2.8 features Tamron's excellent VC image stabilizer. When shooting handheld, it ensures optimal sharpness by effectively compensating for unwanted camera movement. This means that even when shooting at slow shutter speeds, such as at dusk or indoors, the optical performance of the lens can be utilized to the fullest. When filming, VC technology ensures improved image stabilization compared to conventional systems through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The shortest focusing distance of the 17-70mm F2.8 is just 19 cm. With the new zoom lens, the subject can thus be photographed from a shorter distance than with conventional fast zoom lenses for APS-C cameras. At 70 mm telephoto focal length, impressive close-ups are possible at a minimum distance of 39 cm.


Compact and lightweight design
The 17-70mm F2.8 weighs just 525g and is exceptionally handy for a zoom lens with built-in image stabilization, measuring just 119.3mm in length and 74.6mm in diameter. Combined with a Sony APS-C mirrorless camera, it forms a well-balanced unit with high ease of use.


Fast autofocus with RXD technology
The autofocus is based on an exceptionally quiet RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) stepping motor. The autofocus system also features a sensor that continuously determines the current focus setting of the lens. This ensures fast and precise automatic focusing. The focus is reliably tracked for fast-moving subjects. This means that sharp telephoto shots can be taken freehand, even in dynamic situations. The autofocus works very quietly, so that no disturbing focusing noises are recorded during video recordings.
