Especially in terms of image processing and efficiency, the A7R III (ILCE-7RM3) has stepped up a notch. It combines a high-resolution, rear-exposed 42.4-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor with an impressive continuous shooting speed of up to ten frames per second with continuous focus tracking. The camera's dynamic range is 15 f-stops. The sensor is extremely light-sensitive and compensates image noise with effective noise reduction. The fact that the camera can also record videos in the best 4K video quality is self-evident in view of the other functions. All in all, the A7R III is an extremely versatile tool for photographers, videographers, multimedia creators and other creatives with high demands on reliability, flexibility and versatility.

Sony's new A7R III also features a front-end LSI (Large Scale Integration), as well as a new BIONZ X processor that increases processing speed by 1.8 times compared to the A7R II. Thanks to the interplay of these powerful components, the camera offers high continuous shooting speeds, an extremely wide ISO range of 100 to 32,000 (expandable to ISO 50 to 102,400 for stills), and a huge dynamic range of 15 stops at low ISO settings. Therefore, the A7R III can perform at its best in all settings and shooting situations.

The new full-frame model has no low-pass filter to achieve the highest possible resolution. The camera also supports image output in 14-bit RAW format even with silent continuous shooting. To ensure that nothing shakes in view of the high resolution, every photographer can rely on the 5-axis image stabilizer. The system compensates for 5.5 f-stops. No other image stabilization is better [iii]. The vibration-reducing shutter has also declared war on camera shake. It even works at ten frames per second. To make skin tones and colors appear even more natural, there are also improvements in image processing.

High-performance AF and AF/AE tracking at ten frames/second

The innovative new full-frame mirrorless camera processes 76 JPEG/RAW images or 28 uncompressed RAW photos in continuous shooting mode at full resolution and automatic focus tracking in Hi+ mode with a UHS II compatible memory card. The ten frames per second are possible with both silent electronic and mechanical shutter. This makes the camera even more flexible to use. The camera also allows continuous shooting at up to eight frames per second in Live View mode with minimal delay in the viewfinder or on the LCD. Thanks to these high-speed options, even fast subjects are reliably captured and precisely.

For even more convenience, the most important camera functions are also available when writing continuous images to the memory card. These include the Fn (function) button, menu button, image playback, and several menus and parameters such as image rating and other functions that make it easy to sort photos.

In addition, users can activate the anti-flicker function in shooting situations with fluorescent or artificial light. Then, the A7R III can automatically detect flicker at 100 and 120 Hz and select the shutter speed to minimize its effect on the shot. This minimizes potential exposure and color errors at the top and bottom of the frame that can occur at fast shutter speeds.

The A7R III's revised autofocus includes 399 phase-detection points that cover approximately 68 percent of the image area in both horizontal and vertical directions. In addition, the camera has 425 contrast autofocus points 400 more than the A7R II. Especially in low-light conditions, autofocus now grabs twice as fast as on the A7R II. Subject tracking is also twice as precise. Eye autofocus, which focuses on the model's iris at the touch of a button, is now twice as effective and also available when the camera is used with
A Mount lenses from Sony plus adapters.

Other improvements: Autofocus is now available in focus magnification mode. Photographers can now also enjoy phase AF with A Mount lenses. From now on, there is an AF on button, multiple selection, a joystick to quickly move focus points, a flexible touch focus function and much more.

High-quality 4K image for professional video recording

The new A7R III doesn't just specialize in stills. It supports 4K video recording (3840 x 2160 pixels) across the full width of the full-frame sensor. When filming in Super 35mm format, the camera reads each pixel without pixel binning, allowing it to capture 5K data. It then turns them into premium 4K video with extra depth and accuracy.

A new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) capture function supports an instant HDR workflow, allowing extremely realistic 4K HDR images to be played back on HDR TVs. S-Log 2 and S-Log 3 provide plenty of flexibility for color gradients. The camera can capture up to 120 frames per second in Full HD at up to 100 Mbps. This allows four to five frames of slow motion recording in Full HD with autofocus tracking.

    Construction & design for professionals

The new camera has numerous features that professionals in particular will appreciate. These include two memory card slots, one of which supports UHS-II type SD memory cards. Users can save their content in different ways, JPEG and RAW shooting or separate photos and videos. Relay recording is also possible. Battery life is also greatly improved, using the new Z series batteries. Battery performance increases by about 2.2X.

The A7R III is equipped with a brand-new high-resolution quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder with high luminosity and approximately 3,686,000 pixels. This guarantees true-to-life detail reproduction. The Tru-Finder, which is also found in the A9 camera, features a ZEISS T* coating. This reduces reflections. A fluorine coating protects the finder from dirt. The frame rate can be set to 60 or 120 frames per second. The LC display has also been revised and now offers a resolution of 1.44 million dots and WhiteMagic technology for better visibility in bright daylight. Standard or High display quality settings are available for both the viewfinder and display. High makes full use of the amount of data read by the 42.4-megapixel sensor. This ensures a particularly fine-grained representation in the viewfinder and display.

The new A7R III allows convenient transfer of files to smartphone, tablet or computer via WiFi. There is also a sync port that allows external flash units and cables to be connected directly for convenient flash sync. A SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.1 Gen1) USB Type-C port is also present, offering more flexibility in terms of power supply or connected accessories, as well as faster image transfer when connected to a PC.

New Imaging Edge software suite and Pixel Shift multi-shot mode

A new feature on the A7R III is Imaging Edge software, which massively expands the creative options available to photographers. Imaging Edge includes three PC applications called Remote, Viewer, and Edit that can be downloaded for free and support remote live view shooting from the PC and RAW development.

Also brand new to the A7R III is Pixel Shift Multi-Shot mode, which uses the 5-axis optical image stabilizer to create impressively realistic composite images at extremely high resolution. In this mode, the camera precisely shifts the sensor in one-pixel increments to create four individual pixel-shifted images totaling 169.6 megapixels. These four images can be stitched and processed into one image using the new Imaging Edge software suite. The end result is a photo with extremely high resolution and unprecedented color accuracy, ideal for photographing architecture, art, or other subjects with lots of complex detail and color.
