Take every advantage
When you're traveling long distances to capture special photos, expect nothing less from your lens. With 160mm more focal length, you'll have the reach you need whenever the action calls for it.
Always sharp. Always blur-free. You can increase the focal range from 180-400mm (f/4) to 560mm (f/5.6) without changing your grip on the camera. The teleconverter is finger activated via a sturdy and well-placed lever ideal if you don't want to take your eye off the viewfinder. The closest focusing distance is 2 m over the entire focal length range.
Sharp at any focal length
Benefit from sharpness to the corners of the image and minimal light fall-off across the entire zoom range, even at open aperture.
The exceptional resolving power of this lens reliably delivers outstanding results. A fluorite lens provides a high transmission rate with minimal chromatic aberration. Eight ED glass lenses provide images with high detail sharpness to the edges of the image. Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat highly effectively reduces reflections for clear, high-contrast images with brilliant colors. It also minimizes flare, aperture spotting, and ghosting ? even when backlit.
Fast, fast, stable
Nikon's Image Stabilizer (VR) allows for up to four stops longer exposure times, even with the teleconverter activated. Fast-moving subjects are reliably tracked in VR's "SPORT" mode.
You can shoot without worrying about camera shake. The image stabilizer is activated as soon as you press the shutter button to the first pressure point. It not only enables you to take photos with exposure times that may be up to four light value steps longer than without stabilization. The VR mode "SPORT" is specially designed for tracking fast action and results in a steady viewfinder image even during fast pans.
Always on the subject
This lens captures and holds focus extremely quickly and precisely. Electromagnetic iris control ensures precise and consistent exposure even at high frame rates.
Advanced AF tracking keeps moving subjects securely in focus, even if the movement is unpredictable or the subject is moving quickly toward the camera. Subject detection works excellently even in the peripheral areas of the frame. Electromagnetic iris control ensures fast response and maximum precision.
Perfectly balanced
When you have to give it your all in the field, or when hours of shooting sessions are required, Nikon's famously good ergonomics come into their own.
The usual zoom and focus ring positions have been swapped to allow for better balanced operation. The zoom ring is located at the front of the tube, at the natural position of your left hand. This allows for a steadier camera posture while zooming. Both the zoom ring and the focus ring are easy to adjust precisely thanks to the non-slip surface texture. The tripod adapter ring is equipped with bearings for smooth switching between portrait and landscape modes. And the built-in tripod foot points toward the front of the lens to optimize balance and facilitate transport when the lens is attached to a tripod.
Rugged in use
All seams of this lens are elaborately sealed against moisture and dirt. This means that it can withstand demanding environments, whether on the ski slopes or at the fishing grounds of brown bears.
All moving parts of the lens barrel have seals that protect against dust and splashing water.
The fluorine coating resists dust, water and dirt without compromising image quality. A fluorite lens contributes to a low overall weight. And since the lens needs to be changed much less often in the field, the inner workings of your Nikon SLR are also exposed to the elements much less often.
