The classic lightweight wide-angle lens with 35mm focal length allows you to capture a subject within its environment without perspective distortion just the way reportage photographers love it.

Excellent low-light performance

The high f/1.4 aperture allows two stops more light to reach the sensor than a f/2.8 lens, making this lens ideal for freehand shooting in low light.
A large aperture allows the photographer to selectively reduce the depth of field. Such out-of-focus effects are an excellent way to highlight a subject against an attractive background blur. This looks particularly effective when shooting at wide angle.
The 9-blade iris diaphragm makes this blur area look particularly even and natural.

A new standard in imaging quality

Developed by Canon from organic material, the Blue Spectrum Refractive Element solves the problem of color fringing by correcting chromatic aberrations in a way that was not possible before.
UD (Ultra Low-Dispersion) lenses and two aspherical lenses ensure razor-sharp images from the center of the frame to the edges ? even when the lens is used at the maximum aperture.
When shooting into a light source, the SWC (Subwavelength Structure Coating) protects against lens reflections and flare.

Fast and discrete focusing - for unexpected snapshots

Because the ring-USM driven autofocus is exceptionally fast and precise, with virtually no noise, you can shoot without disturbing anyone.
Anytime manual focus allows you to fine-tune focus without switching AF modes and taking your eye off the camera.

Blue Spectrum Refractive Element

Canon developed the Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR) Element to reduce the tendency for color fringing in lenses with large lens diameters. This special optical material of organic origin is much more effective at correcting such color fringing than, for example, fluorite, UD (ultra low dispersion) or super UD glass. Color fringes are caused by chromatic aberration a phenomenon in which the different colors of light are focused at different points. The use of BR optical material in the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM minimizes this effect. As a result, the other elements of the lens can be optimized for especially high sharpness, contrast, and reduction of reflections.
