PENTAX, the specialist for demanding outdoor photography, introduces a new milestone: The HD PENTAX-D FA645 MACRO 90 mm f/2.8 ED AW SR portrait and macro lens for the powerful 645 series medium format cameras.
The focal length of the FA645 90 mm f/2.8 Macro is equivalent to about 71 mm converted to the 35 mm 35 mm format. This makes it ideal for portrait shots in perfect quality. The large aperture of 1:2.8 allows the photographer to skillfully play with depth of field or take atmospheric shots in reduced light. The blades of the aperture are shaped in such a way that, regardless of the aperture value selected, the result is always a round aperture and thus a beautifully harmonious bokeh.
As a macro lens, the FA645 90 mm f/2.8 Macro can also capture subjects at a very close distance, so it's also great for still life or nature shots. Thanks to its design with elaborate seals, such shots can be taken in the wild even when high humidity, cool temperatures or dust make it almost impossible to work with other cameras.
As a high-performance lens for high-performance cameras, it comes up with impressive technical solutions: It is the first PENTAX medium format lens to be equipped with a built-in image stabilizer that compensates for camera shake during exposure without delay, so it always records undistorted, sharp, detailed images in perfect quality. Special ED lenses inside the lens ensure particularly high sharpness and imaging performance. A newly developed, even more effective coating of the front lens reduces annoying reflections. Thanks to internal focusing, the filter and sunshade retain their position even when focusing automatically or manually.

Focal length and maximum aperture ideal for atmospheric portraits
Mounted on a PENTAX 645D medium format DSLR camera, this lightweight telephoto lens offers a focal length of approx. 71 mm (converted to 35 mm 35 mm format). This makes it particularly suitable for atmospheric or expressive portrait photography. The maximum aperture of 1:2.8 allows the depth of field to be restricted to a narrow range. This keeps the face razor-sharp, while the softly drawn foreground and background create an atmospheric frame for the subject.
As a special feature, PENTAX shaped the individual blades of the aperture so that the aperture is not polygonal but always perfectly round. As a result, contours and light effects outside the plane of focus appear very harmonious, and point light sources are reproduced free of streaks. In addition, the FA645 MACRO 90 mm f/2.8 produces a fantastically perfect, soft bokeh.
The high light intensity also enables snapshots in unfavorable lighting conditions, such as indoor shots, overcast skies or at dusk, and without a conspicuous flash or costly additional lighting.
Impressive close-ups thanks to macro function
As a macro lens, the FA645 MACRO 90 mm f/2.8 can also image subjects that are at a very short distance (up to 41 cm) in front of the front lens. The extreme imaging performance of the lens in combination with the PENTAX 645D ensures breathtaking detail shots in outstanding image quality. The reproduction scale is 1:2.
High image quality thanks to special glass and new coating
The FA645 MACRO 90 mm f/2.8 offers outstanding sharpness and imaging performance. This is due to two special ED (Extra-low Distortion) lens elements: ED glass is characterized by a high refractive index combined with very low dispersion. Both the primary and secondary spectrum are thus corrected to an absolute minimum. This ensures particularly low chromatic aberrations and clear, brilliant image results right into the corners.
The FA645 MACRO 90 mm f/2.8 is the first lens to feature a newly developed, particularly high-quality multi-coating called HD Coating (High Definition). This coating is particularly effective and can be applied even finer, even thinner. This increases light transmission and also reduces reflection. The result is sharp, clear images of exceptional quality. They are free of light spots (flare) and ghost images even when directly exposed to backlight.
As a mark of their high optical grade and outstanding quality, the HD PENTAX-D FA645 MACRO 90 mm f/2.8 ED AW SR and all future lenses in the HD PENTAX series will bear a red ring.
SR image stabilizer built-in
The FA645 MACRO 90 mm f/2.8 was not only developed for optimally controllable shooting conditions, but also explicitly for outdoor use, i.e. for freehand photography or under unfavorable lighting conditions. In order to push back the limits here, the FA645 MACRO 90 mm f/2.8 is the first lens in the PENTAX range to feature a built-in image stabilizer. This SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism compensates for unwanted vibrations or shocks during exposure without delay and extremely effectively. The photographer thus gains almost 4 f-stops.
